Winter Emergency Preparedness

Emergency Management Office

Nova Scotians are being encouraged to prepare themselves and their families for winter hazards.

"All Nova Scotians should take the time to prepare emergency kits for their homes and vehicles," said Carolyn Bolivar-Getson, Minister of Emergency Management. "A few minutes of preparation can go a long way toward keeping yourself and your loved ones safe and comfortable when winter storms strike."

The Emergency Management Office website, www.gov.ns.ca/emo, has a thorough checklist for emergency kit supplies. Residents should have emergency items on hand in their homes, such as a battery-powered radio, flashlight, extra batteries, medications, food and water, and extra clothing and blankets.

Motorists should avoid unnecessary travel during winter storms and listen for travel updates on local radio stations. If it is safe to drive, they should be sure to carry a shovel, sand or salt, extra clothing, food and water, blankets, booster cables and a first-aid kit. Always leave with a full tank of gas.

"I strongly recommend a good set of four winter tires," Ms. Bolivar-Getson said. "And for people who own cellphones, it's always good to have a car charger in your vehicle."

The Emergency Management Office works closely with municipalities throughout Nova Scotia to ensure preparation for emergency events.
