Province Helps Fund Transit Feasibility Study

The province is investing $30,000 in a feasibility study that will help bring Lunenburg County one step closer to establishing transit service in the community.

"This study is an essential first step in the development of a transit system on the south shore," said Natural Resources Minister Carolyn Bolivar-Getson today, Feb. 13, in Bridgewater, on behalf of Barry Barnet, Minister responsible for Conserve Nova Scotia.

"Sustainable transportation offers many benefits for our environment, residents and communities. Transit can improve the quality of life for people of all ages by providing them with greater access to employment, goods and services."

On behalf of the communities involved in the project, the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg will issue a request for proposals for the feasibility study.

The study will evaluate the cost-effectiveness of the service by examining start-up and operating costs, ridership, potential routes and service delivery models. The study will also provide recommendations for implementation.

The towns of Bridgewater, Mahone Bay, Lunenburg, and the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg are also contributing to the project.

"Most drivers in Lunenburg County rely on their own vehicles to get from point A to B," said Don Downe, Mayor of the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg. "This study will bring us that much closer to providing them with an alternative transportation option.

"Transit can also bring increased mobility to all members of our communities."

The deadline to submit requests for proposals is Wednesday, March 4. The study is expected to be completed this summer. For more information on the study and the request for proposals call 902-543-8181.
