Highland Village Releases July Event Lineup

The lifestyles of pioneer Gaels in Nova Scotia is highlighted in the Highland Village Museum/An Clachan Gàidhealach event schedule for July.

The outdoor living history museum that allows visitors to explore period buildings, visit with costumed interpreters and enjoy a breathtaking view, begins the month with Na Laithean Sona/Happy Days Children's Program. Youth eight to 12-years-old are provided costumes and carry out the day-to-day activities of pioneer Gaels, including chores, crafts, games, language and song. The program is offered Wednesdays, at a cost of $30 per child. Reservations are required.

Na Deugairean/Living History for Youth is a similar program offered to teens, age 13-17. Participants spend a day in the life of a young Gael and participate in various activities with museum staff. The program is offered July 9 and July 23. Cost is $30 and reservations are required.

Friday mornings from 10 a.m. to noon will be fun and educational as children five to 10 years old take part in interactive games that focus on language, song, dance, and other aspects of Scottish heritage.

On Saturday, July 11, the popular Cod Fish Supper will be held from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The traditional Cape Breton codfish meal with all the trimmings costs $15 for adults and $8 for children. Hot dogs are available for $2.

On July 15th Highland Village will offer Candlelight Tours/Cuairt nan Coinnlean from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Guests will experience Nova Scotia's Scottish heritage on a storytelling tour lead by well-known Cape Breton historian Jim St. Clair. Reservations are required.
