Chowder Contest Returns to Sherbrooke Village

Tourism, Culture and Heritage (Dec. 2003 - Jan. 2011)

It is time for the annual Sherbrooke Village showdown to decide who makes the best seafood chowder in the region.

The annual event at the museum is one of the highlights of the season, when folks and restaurants put their recipes to the test, try to hang on to their titles or wrestle them away for the champs. But the real winners at the Sunday, Aug. 23 event will be the spectators who get to sample the sights, smells and tastes of the steaming hot chowders.

After three summers, organizers have filled this year's event chock full of family fun, and, of course, copious amounts of the classic East Coast seafood dish!

Judging for the commercial category will start at noon. Visitors will be able to purchase a testing bowl for $2, which will let them test the commercial entries until they are gone. The domestic competition begins at 3 p.m.

The event will also celebrate Nova Scotia's Incredible Picnic, with the Historic Sherbrooke Village Development Society selling bowls of its own delicious chowder, mussels and hot dogs, with proceeds supporting improvements at the historic site.

At 4 p.m., there will be a pie-eating contest, open to the public with musical entertainment starting at 4:30 p.m., with Sheet Harbour's Fraser Newcombe and the Smith Dancers. There will also be crafts for children, field games and face painting. The festivities will be capped off with a fireworks display at dusk. The entertainment is free.
