Bluenose II Restoration Sets Sail With Contracts Awarded

Tourism, Culture and Heritage (Dec. 2003 - Jan. 2011)

Nova Scotia's sailing ambassador Bluenose II is closer to a planned restoration with the announcement today, Dec. 17, that contracts have been signed with a project manager and design consultant.

Tourism, Culture and Heritage Minister Percy Paris announced the awarding of the project management contract to MHPM Project Managers Inc. following a request for proposals which closed on Oct. 5.

Mr. Paris also announced that Lengkeek Vessel Engineering Inc. would provide design consultation by developing detailed plans and specifications to be used during the construction phase of the refit project. The firm was selected from a number of proponents who bid on a second request for proposals earlier this fall.

"The refit of Bluenose II is welcome news because of the jobs it will create during these challenging economic times," said Mr. Paris. "It also assures Nova Scotians that this national icon will continue to represent our proud spirit and heritage to the world for many years to come."

The Atlantic region office of MHPM Project Managers Inc. has provided leadership to a number of private and public sector projects. The firm has offices across Canada and has also been involved with projects in Africa and the Middle East.

"Bluenose II's legacy is well known across Canada and in many parts of the world," said Stephen Vaslet of MHPM Project Managers Inc. "We are proud to be leading a project that will ensure its legacy remains secure for the people of Nova Scotia."

Lengkeek Vessel Engineering Inc. has more than 25 years of experience as a naval architectural and marine engineering firm and has designed a wide range of vessels including yachts, pilot boats and offshore and passenger ships. They are based in Dartmouth, and have an office in St. John's, N.L.

"Helping to maintain Bluenose II's proud role as Nova Scotia's sailing ambassador is truly exciting," said Marius Lengkeek of Lengkeek Vessel Engineering Inc. "We look forward to contributing to Nova Scotia's seafaring heritage as part of the project."

The province and the government of Canada committed up to $7.2 million each toward restoring Bluenose II as part of the federal infrastructure stimulus program. Under terms of the federal program, projects must be completed by March 31, 2011, to qualify for matching funding.

Bluenose II will be out of the water during the 2010 sailing season for the refit to proceeds.

Tendering for the construction phase will begin shortly with a request for expressions of interest to identify qualified bidders.
