Lights Out for Earth Hour

Conserve Nova Scotia

Nova Scotians are being encouraged to turn off the lights in support of Earth Hour on Saturday, March 27.

Beginning at 8:30 p.m., people should turn off non-essential lights, computers, and electrical equipment as a symbolic show of support for action on climate change.

"Nova Scotia is recognized around the world as an environmental leader for its strong and ambitious climate-change commitments," said Premier Darrell Dexter. "Nova Scotians' participation in Earth Hour is yet another example of that leadership. It helps to remind everyone that the small energy conservation actions we make in our daily lives will add up to make a big difference for Nova Scotia, and the world."

Bill Estabrooks, Minister responsible for Conserve Nova Scotia, is encouraging everyone to participate in the event, and to consider ways to reduce electricity year round.

"For many of us, turning off the lights and electronics reminds us of the simple games and activities that we enjoyed as children," said Mr. Estabrooks. "By turning off our lights for just one hour, we can have a good time while sending a powerful message that we care about our environment."

Millions of people in more than 80 countries participated in the last year's event.
