Telecommunications Restored in Cape Breton

Emergency Management Office

Local, cellphone, and long distance telephone service in Cape Breton was restored at about 2:30 p.m. today, June 2. EMO advises residents that 911 service are also accessible.

In response to the telecommunications outage, EMO immediately opened the provincial Joint Emergency Operations Centre and began communicating with its governmental and non-governmental partners.

Fire, police and RCMP presence was increased in Cape Breton. Provincial Emergency Health Services dispatched its mobile command centre to Sydney and implemented its emergency ambulance service plan, strategically positioning ambulances in key areas. The Department of Transportation dispatched additional communications resources to Cape Breton.

EMO thanks all residents and emergency responders for their efforts during the event to ensure public safety, as well as Bell Aliant for its work to restore telecommunications.

Any time 911 services are affected, EMO meets with the parties involved to investigate the cause and determine what steps can be taken to prevent a similar service disruption.
