Funding Will Help Cut Travel, Share Information

Environment (April 2008 - Feb. 2021)

Nova Scotia municipalities will be able to decrease travel, and associated air pollutants, thanks to two grants totalling $132,000 from the province.

Most of the funding, from the ecoNova Scotia Fund for Clean Air and Climate Change, will go to the Association of Municipal Administrators, Nova Scotia, for its municipal video-conferencing program.

The Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities will receive $5,600 for a Municipal Sustainability information project.

"Municipalities in this province are making sincere efforts to lessen their environmental impact, and this funding shows genuine leadership by supporting and enhancing that work," Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations Minister Ramona Jennex said today, June 10, at a meeting of the Association of Municipal Administrators of Nova Scotia, on behalf of Environment Minister Sterling Belliveau.

"These two projects will significantly reduce air emissions that lead to climate change and also allow communities to inspire one another with stories of successful initiatives."

The Association of Municipal Administrators will receive $127,030 to support the group purchase of video-conferencing equipment. This will enable alternative forms of meetings, thus reducing travel and associated emissions.

The Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities's grant will allow information on municipal sustainability projects to be posted, and therefore easily shared, on the Municipal Sustainability Office's website.

The projects, supported by ecoNova Scotia with funding from the government of Canada, further the Environmental Goals and Sustainable Prosperity Act and the Climate Change Action Plan.

With this announcement, ecoNova Scotia has funded about 100 projects since it was established in 2007. For more information on the fund, visit www.gov.ns.ca/ecoNovaScotia .
