Disturbance at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility

Justice

Corrections officials are commending staff today, June 16, for its quick handling of an overnight disturbance at the Cental Nova Scotia Correctional Facility.

The facility was in lock down last night for three hours after an inmate was assaulted at 9 p.m. That inmate appeared in court this morning.

Two living units remain in lock down until offenders are interviewed.

At the height of the incident, 17 inmates were causing property damage in a day unit and refused to return to their cells. Halifax Regional Police responded as a precaution, however their services were not required.

"I want to commend the staff for their quick, professional response in getting the disturbance under control," said David Horner, executive director of Corrections for the Department of Justice.

"We are now assessing property damage and doing a thorough investigation into the incident."
