South Shore Region Receives Recreation Funding

Health Promotion and Protection (March 2006 - Jan. 2011)

Recreation facilities in the South Shore region will receive $357,660 through nine grants announced today, June 18, under the Recreation Facility Development Program.

"We are providing $2.94 million in grants across the province," said MLA Gary Ramey, on behalf of Health Protection and Promotion Minister Maureen MacDonald. "The investments we make in our organizations and recreation facilities today, will help people lead healthier and more active lives tomorrow. This is the right decision for Nova Scotia families."

Under the Recreation Facility Development Program, the grants will be used to renovate facilities, develop and maintain walking trails, and build and upgrade various fields and buildings used for sport and recreation.

The program assists community groups, municipalities and other not-for-profit organizations develop facilities to increase public participation in sport and physical recreation.

Mr. Ramey made the announcement at the Yarmouth YMCA, which received $150,000 for upgrades to the facility.

"The YMCA of Yarmouth started on this project at the end of 2005 and has worked closely with the province all along the way," said Barrie MacGregor, CEO, Yarmouth YMCA. "With the continuous support of the province, the YMCA of Yarmouth will be assured of an ongoing presence in the community, keeping a large and vibrant facility viable in a small town."

  • Municipality of Lunenburg: develop Marine Park, $28,000
  • Municipality of Shelburne: repairs to Tom Tigney Trail Bridge, $30,000
  • Shelburne & Area Minor Baseball Association: convert field to a baseball field, $4,000
  • Shelburne Lions Club: Repairs/upgrades to Shelburne Lion's community hall, $9,660
  • South Shore Regional School Board, Chester Area Middle School: repair track and field facilities, $9,000
  • South Shore Regional School Board, Hebbville Academy: upgrade playground, $14,000
  • South Shore Regional School Board, Wickwire Academy: develop playground, $25,000
  • Village of Chester Commission: upgrade Chester Lido Pool, $88,000 over two years
  • YMCA Yarmouth: upgrades to YMCA Yarmouth, $150,000 over two years
