Annapolis Valley Region Receives Recreation Funding

Health Promotion and Protection (March 2006 - Jan. 2011)

Recreation facilities in the Annapolis Valley region will receive $318,100 through 17 grants announced today, June 21, under the Recreation Facility Development Program.

"We are making the right decision for Nova Scotia families by investing $2.94 million in recreation facilities throughout Nova Scotia," said MLA Jim Morton, on behalf of Maureen MacDonald, Minister of Health Promotion and Protection. "By investing in these projects, we are ensuring that people in all regions of this province have access to safe and modern facilities where they can be active and stay healthy."

Under the Recreation Facility Development Program, the grants will be used to renovate facilities, develop and maintain walking trails, and build and upgrade various fields and buildings used for sport and recreation.

The program assists community groups, municipalities and other not-for-profit organizations develop facilities to increase public participation in sport and physical recreation.

Mr. Morton made the announcement at the Port Willams Community Centre. The Village of Port Williams received $10,000 to complete the second phase of the Port Williams Community Park.

"The Village of Port Williams appreciates the continued support of the Department of Health Promotion and Protection for the Community Park and its second phase," said Lewis Benedict, chair of the Port Williams Village Commission. "This second phase of funding will go towards walking trails, a sun shelter and a reflexology garden, the first in the Maritimes."


NOTE: Investments in the Annapolis Valley region are:

  • Town of Annapolis Royal: construct Annapolis skate park - Phase 1, $11,000
  • Town of Berwick: replace gym floor at Berwick Community Centre, $15,000
  • Bridgetown Curling Club: replace ice plant, $64,000
  • Canning Village Commission: develop Canning walking trail loop, $24,000
  • Digby Area Recreation Commission: improve Digby curling rink including the parking lot, $14,000
  • Municipality of Digby: construct Digby mini-soccer field, $10,000
  • Middleton and District Rink Commission: renovate Middleton Arena roof, $20,000
  • Moms on the Playground Society: construct pre-school playground, $15,000
  • Nature Conservancy of Canada: develop coastal trail on south shore of Brier Island, $15,000
  • New Minas Village Commission: construct New Minas multi-use trail, $30,000 over two years
  • Port Williams Village Commission: construct Port Williams community park phase II, $10,000
  • Tri-County Regional School Board: improve Digby Elementary School playground, $22,000
  • Tri-County Regional School Board: rebuild Digby Elementary School soccer field and repair Digby Regional High School soccer field, $8,000
  • Tri-County Regional School Board: install playground and community park at Islands Consolidated School, Freeport, $20,000 over two years
  • Municipality of West Hants: upgrade St. Croix ballfields, $8,100
  • Rotary Club of Windsor: improve Camp Mockingee, $20,000 over two years
  • Town of Windsor: replace equipment at Burgess Crescent Playground, $12,000
