Fundy Region Receives Recreation Funding

Health Promotion and Protection (March 2006 - Jan. 2011)

Recreation facilities in the Fundy region will receive $289,500, through eight grants announced today, June 28, under the Recreation Facility Development Program.

"The province has made the right decision for Nova Scotian families by announcing the investment of $2.94 million in recreation facilities throughout Nova Scotia," said John MacDonell, Minister of Natural Resources, on behalf of Maureen MacDonald, Minister of Health Promotion and Protection. "These grants will greatly aid in improving and building our provinces playgrounds, trails, and indoor and outdoor recreation facilities where all Nova Scotians can stay fit and be active."

Under the Recreation Facility Development Program, the grants will be used to renovate facilities, develop and maintain walking trails, and build and upgrade various fields and buildings used for sport and recreation.

The program assists community groups, municipalities and other not-for-profit organizations develop facilities to increase public participation in sport and physical recreation.

Mr. MacDonell made the announcement at the Royal Canadian Legion in Enfield, which received $16,000 to replace the roof.

"Rural communities in Nova Scotia rely on non-traditional recreational facilities like the Royal Canadian Legion in Enfield, to provide and support community based recreational programs," said Thomas White, president of the Royal Canadian Legion, Montgomery Branch 133. "We extend a sincere thanks to the province and the Department of Health Promotion and Protection for recognizing our contribution to our community, enabling us to keep the recreational programs housed in this facility going for many years to come."

  • Amherst Curling Club: improve Amherst Curling Club rink, $21,500 over two years
  • Cumberland Regional Economic Development Association: improve Cape Chignecto Trail, 40,000
  • Tatamagouche Area Trails Association: repair French River bridge, 29,000
  • Royal Canadian Legion, Enfield: replace roof, $16,000
  • Town of Amherst: redevelop Dickey Park, $25,000 over two years
  • Town of Amherst: develop Amherst skateboard park, $75,000 over two years
  • Town of Truro: develop Douglas Street recreation centre, $31,000 over two years
  • Truro Curling Club: upgrade Truro Curling Club, $52,000 over two years
