People Reminded to Keep Dogs on a Leash

Natural Resources (to July 2018)

Dog lovers often enjoy Nova Scotia's natural beauty with their canine companions but the Department of Natural Resources reminds them to use a leash where required by law.

With provincial parks and trails experiencing increased activity, the public should be aware that it is illegal under the Provincial Parks Act to allow a dog to run at large in these areas.

"This leash law is in place to protect the public," said John MacDonell, Minister of Natural Resources. "Nova Scotians and visitors to our province must feel safe when enjoying our parks and nature. A leash protects humans and dogs."

Mr. MacDonell points out that even obedient dogs can act differently in unfamiliar territory where they are exposed to new scents or confront wildlife.

"As we are all aware, any dog may bite in certain circumstances and unfortunately members of the public and our Department of Natural Resources employees have been bitten in provincial parks," said Mr. MacDonell.

Complaints about dogs off their leash in Nova Scotia's provincial parks are taken seriously. Penalties include fines of $167.71 to $2000, up to six months in jail, or both.
