Province Supports Halifax Regional Municipality Project

The province supports Halifax Regional Municipality's direction with enhancements to the Dartmouth Common and the construction of a new Bridge Transit Terminal.

"I am committed to preserving the Dartmouth Common, because it will help make life better for families in and around the Dartmouth area," said the Premier Darrell Dexter. "The Dartmouth Common is part of our heritage, and our future."

Ramona Jennex, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations, made the announcement today, July 29.

The province will introduce legislation this fall to better identify and expand the boundaries of the Dartmouth Commons to ensure its long-term preservation. Halifax Regional Municipality is moving forward with several initiatives to enhance the existing Dartmouth Common area.

Halifax Regional Municipality Mayor Peter Kelly said he is pleased that the province and the municipality have worked together to ensure improvements to public transit are carried out.

"The new Dartmouth Bridge Terminal will be the busiest facility in the Metro Transit system. As such, it is vital to our efforts to increase transit ridership and broaden the customer base," said Mayor Kelly. "Our two levels of government have worked successfully together to support this initiative while continuing to be mindful of the issues surrounding the Dartmouth Common."

"We look forward to working with Halifax Regional Municipality to ensure that the Dartmouth Commons is protected and remains a vital asset for the community for generations to come," said Ms. Jennex.

The Dartmouth Common was established in 1788.
