Surrette Battery, Renewable Energy Producer, Reaches International Markets from Springhill

Nova Scotia Business Inc. (Dec. 2004 - Nov. 2022)

The rising demand for renewable energy solutions is creating international growth for Springhill-based Surrette Battery.

The company produces batteries for markets such as Mexico and the Caribbean. The batteries store solar power to be used during power outages, which is vital in markets such as Mexico, Haiti and the Dominican Republic where power is often lost up to six times a day.

"We're investing to support internationally focused companies like Surrette Battery that are pursuing new growth opportunities and enhancing productivity," said Minister of Economic and Rural Development Percy Paris. "This reflects our commitment to grow the economy and create good jobs in Nova Scotia."

Since 2008, the company has been implementing a lean manufacturing process to improve productivity. To enhance that, Surrette Battery is investing in its facility, including a building expansion and equipment upgrades.

To support Surrette Battery's expansion, the province, through Nova Scotia Business Inc., has authorized a four-year payroll rebate to a maximum $399,198.

"The additional building space and new equipment will enable Surrette Battery to service increasing demand in export markets, especially in the renewable energy sector in Europe and Central America," said James Surrette, president of Surrette Battery.

The company has a full-time workforce of 50 people.

"Surrette Battery has been a key employer in Springhill since 1959. The payroll rebate will assist the company to increase its productivity and expand production capacity to service new export markets," said Stephen Lund, president and CEO of Nova Scotia Business Inc.(NSBI).

Surrette Battery Company is one of North America's leading lead-acid battery manufacturers. Established in 1935, with a production facility in Salem, Mass., Surrette relocated to Canada in 1959 and is the nation's only remaining independent battery manufacturer.

Nova Scotia Business Inc. is Nova Scotia's private-sector-led business development agency. NSBI is the investment attraction arm of the province and helps businesses in Nova Scotia meet growth potential through advisory services, trade development, financing and venture capital.
