Economic and Rural Development (Jan. 2009 - Jan. 2011)

The province is supporting community efforts in Canso to give residents better access learning and literacy resources as well as help make the most of it's waterfront.

An investment of $66,000 through the Department of Economic and Rural Development's Community Development Fund to the Canso Library Resource Society and $12,500 to the Canso Harbour Authority were announced at a community event today, Aug. 11.

"The province continues to make life better for families in every region through sustainable investments in community-led initiatives," said MLA Jim Boudreau, on behalf of Economic and Rural Development Minister Percy Paris. "These projects will benefit residents of Canso and surrounding areas for years to come."

The library society will be able to expand its building to accommodate more programming and be more accessible. The improvements to the library will give residents access to better learning and literacy resources.

"This project will provide Canso and area with a bright, modern library resource centre in which citizens of all ages may develop and provide educational programming," said Renee Albrecht, Canso Library Resource Society.

The harbour authority will hire a consultant to produce the waterfront development plan, including a strategy to develop the land and infrastructure.

"We are pleased to be moving forward with this exciting project," said Bob Anderson of the harbour authority. "This investment will enable us to put together a plan that is crucial to the development and sustainability of our waterfront."

The Community Development Fund assists regional areas and rural communities with local planning and entrepreneurship. It helps to develop co-operatives and projects to ensure sustainable communities across Nova Scotia. Last year, projects totaled more than $1.4 million.
