Provincial Government Employees Kick-off United Way Campaign

Environment (April 2008 - Feb. 2021)

Hundreds of provincial government employees celebrated the start of the annual United Way fund-raising campaign today, Oct. 6.

This year's goal is to raise $475,000 dollars for the United Way of Halifax Region.

Premier Darrell Dexter was joined by Kim MacNeil, acting deputy minister of Environment and Catherine Woodman, president and CEO of United Way, Halifax region, to kick-off the campaign and thank employees for their ongoing support and volunteerism at the new Seaport Farmers' Market on Halifax's waterfront.

"Every year Nova Scotia government employees in the Halifax region come together to support the United Way's work in our communities," said Premier Dexter. "Their generosity and commitment goes a long way toward making life better for Nova Scotian families."

The Department of Environment is this year's campaign host and they have committed to fostering a healthy environment through every facet of the campaign. This is reflected in the state-of-the-art venue chosen for the kick-off.

"Public servants, by the nature of their work, are committed to making a difference in the lives of Nova Scotians," said Mr. MacNeil. "Last year's campaign was our most successful to date, and we are planning for a banner year once again. The opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of a healthy environment is an added benefit to everyone involved."

The kick-off event featured booths representing government and private sector initiatives promoting and supporting environmental sustainability. Attending employees participated in activities that showed how everyone can take steps to reduce damage to the environment and viewed the state-of-the-art green technology used in the market's construction.

Funds raised through departmental events, prize draws and payroll deductions go toward the United Way's Halifax community fund, which supports local community-based agencies and programs.

The provincial government campaign runs until Nov. 30.
