TRANSPORTATION/INFRASTRUCTURE RENEWAL--Ribbon-Cutting at Larry Uteck Interchange

Nova Scotians will benefit from improved transportation and enhanced regional development with the opening of Larry Uteck Interchange on Highway 102 in Bedford.

Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Minister Bill Estabrooks, MP Gerald Keddy, on behalf of federal Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Chuck Strahl, and HRM Mayor Peter Kelly cut the ribbon today, Oct. 15 on the new $24.4 million interchange. It is expected to open to traffic this weekend.

"By working together with other levels of government, we're able to get the most out of our road-building dollars, create jobs and help grow the economy," said Mr. Estabrooks. "This new link is designed to keep Nova Scotians moving smoothly and safely."

The $24.4-million project was cost-shared by the province, federal government and Halifax Regional Municipality.

"We are investing in infrastructure priorities to enable communities across our country to continue to grow and prosper," said Mr. Keddy. "The completion of this crucial interchange is a prime example of this deep commitment to strong, prosperous communities and to stimulating economic growth. This initiative will have a positive impact on the region."

"The Larry Uteck Interchange is a critical piece of infrastructure which is needed to ensure the successful development of Wentworth Estates, Bedford South and Bedford West master plan areas and to meet outcomes of the HRM regional plan," said Mayor Kelly.

Federal funding for the project was part of the 2008-2009 Nova Scotia Annual Capital Plan under the Provincial/Territorial Base Fund and approved under the National Highway System Infrastructure category.
