Growing the Economy is Theme of Geology Matters Conference

Natural Resources (to July 2018)

The 34th annual Geology Matters conference will illustrate the benefits of mining to Nova Scotians and how mineral development contributes to a sustainable economy.

The two-day event begins Monday, Oct. 25 at the Westin Nova Scotian Hotel in Halifax.

"It is fitting that the theme of this year's conference is Growing the Economy as mining employs thousands of Nova Scotians, contributes around $500 million annually to our economy and greatly to our quality of life," said John MacDonell, Minister of Natural Resources.

Geology Matters is organized by the Department of Natural Resources in partnership with the Mining Association of Nova Scotia, the Mining Society of Nova Scotia, and the Nova Scotia Prospectors Association.

The opening day of the conference will feature a keynote address by acting deputy minister of Environment Kim MacNeil and a reception and awards ceremony hosted by Mr. MacDonell. The itinerary for the second day features guest speaker John Woods of Minas Basin Pulp and Paper.

"Raw and processed rock and minerals are so common to most people they do not think about where they originated or what was involved to bring them into their homes," said Paul Smith, president of the Mining Association of Nova Scotia. "This year's conference is a tremendous opportunity for everyone to learn about new innovations in the industry and how mining activities impact our everyday lives."
