Volunteerism Moving to Labour and Workforce Development

Labour and Workforce Development (April 2008 - Jan. 2011)

Nova Scotia's 5,800 voluntary sector organizations will be better supported now that resources have been shifted to the department of Labour and Workforce Development.

"I've spent many years working with, and for, the voluntary sector and I can say firsthand that the work they do touches the lives of Nova Scotians in every region," said Labour and Workforce Development Minister Marilyn More. "These organizations are facing many of the same challenges affecting other businesses and industries.

"This change allows us to better use our resources, staff and programs to help support these organizations as they continue their good work."

Effective immediately, the mandate of volunteerism will move from Health Promotion and Protection to Labour and Workforce Development with an expanded focus to better include the voluntary sector as a whole.

With more than 24,000 employees, the voluntary sector is a significant employer in the province. The change will provide a direct link with established programs and supports being offered to employers in the province. This includes labour standards, occupational health and safety, and workplace education.

Ms. More will remain responsible for the mandate with new title of Minister of the Voluntary Sector.
