Premier Announces Funding for Yarmouth's 250th Anniversary

Premier Darrell Dexter announced today, Nov. 15, the province will provide $150,000 to help Yarmouth celebrate its 250th anniversary next year.

The celebrations will showcase the community as a unique destination and help to build the region's economy.

"This is an incredible opportunity for the province to work in partnership with Yarmouth to create good jobs, grow the economy and establish the region as a leading tourism destination," said Premier Dexter. "We need to seize every opportunity to build on our investments and create real momentum in the region."

Government funding for the anniversary will come primarily from the departments of Economic and Rural Development, and Tourism, Culture and Heritage.

"We continue to work with our industry partners on marketing, product development and training to build a sustainable tourism industry in Southwest Nova Scotia," said Percy Paris, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Heritage. "Yarmouth's 250th anniversary marks an exciting opportunity to celebrate and attract more visitors to the region."

A committee of more than 100 volunteers has been formed to create a year-long celebration to mark the founding of Yarmouth. More than 60 events are planned, including the Incredible Birthday Party on June 9, the Founder's Fair, a staging of the play Baltimore and more than a dozen festivals countywide.

"We are working hard to create an amazing celebration of 250 years of diverse community, heritage and culture," said Town of Yarmouth 250th Celebration Committee Chair, Ken Langille. "This is an exciting first step in partnering with the province of Nova Scotia to make Yarmouth a destination."

The Yarmouth celebrations will kick-off Jan. 1, with fireworks and ringing bells to herald the new year. A levy will welcome everyone to the town hall on New Year's Day.
