Province Invests in Historic Windsor-Area Building, Sewage Treatment Plant

Economic and Rural Development (Jan. 2009 - Jan. 2011)

The province is investing more than $140,000 in two Windsor-area projects that will help grow the economy and make life better for families in the Windsor area.

Economic and Rural Development Minister Percy Paris announced today, Nov. 19, that $41,255 is being invested in the industrial building on the Hants County Exhibition grounds. The facility currently houses the oldest continuously run agricultural fair in North America.

"The Hants County Exhibition has been operating for 245 years, and I am proud to support one of Nova Scotia's truly historic annual events," said Mr. Paris. "The exhibition facility contributes almost $4 million each year to the province's economy, and this investment will help the grounds continue to support good jobs in the Windsor area."

The investment in the exhibition grounds comes from the Strategic Funding Initiative, and will be used to replace the facility's 55 year-old roof. The Windsor Agricultural Society will also contribute $10,000 towards this project.

"The Hants County Exhibition grounds host up to 11,000 visitors a day, and more than 250,000 people each year," said David Coombes, manager with the Windsor Agricultural Society. "The exhibition grounds are a cornerstone of the Windsor community, and this investment will help us continue to host and attract first-class events."

On behalf of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations Minister Ramona Jennex, Mr. Paris also announced the Town of Windsor will receive $100,000 towards the new wastewater treatment facility project.

"I am pleased the province shares our view that these are important investments in the future of our community," said Windsor Mayor Paul Beazley. "The water treatment facility is good for the environment and our green economy, plus one of our great attractions is getting the upgrade it needs. Both will provide a lasting benefit to our community."

The Strategic Funding Initiative helps to ensure economic growth and sustainable communities for Nova Scotia, building on their assets and strengths. Funding is provided on a one-time basis used for non-recurring capital costs and investments for not for profit organizations across the province.
