Cleanup of Spilled Pulp Logs Continues

Natural Resources (to July 2018)

The Department of Natural Resources is acting to ensure that those responsible for a spill of pulp logs in Pictou Harbour on Tuesday, Nov. 9, remove the drifting wood.

"The spilled wood must be cleaned up as soon as possible for the safety of residents and boats in the area," said John MacDonell, Minister of Natural Resources.

"Our staff is working diligently to ensure the clean-up order is followed, and will continue to monitor the area to observe the drifting wood."

The department has issued an order for Anticosti Forest Products which owns the logs, and the operator of the barge and tug boat, McKeil Work Boats, to remove the wood.

Permits have also been issued by the department to allow Anticosti Forest Products to operate vehicles on beaches along the North Shore of Pictou County to remove the wood.

The cleanup effort is expected to continue for up to six weeks.
