Preparing for Winter
TRANSPORTATION/INFRASTRUCTURE RENEWAL--Preparing for Winter Weather
Although Nova Scotia has yet to see a major snowfall, the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal is ready to deal with the elements.
"We have more than 1,000 staff and 400 pieces of equipment for snow and ice clearing across the province," said Bill Estabrooks, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal. "Staff is at the ready 24-hours a day, seven days a week to clear and salt our highways."
When severe winter storms hit, the department encourages people to stay at home to ensure everyone's safety, and to allow winter maintenance operators to properly clear roads.
If it is necessary to drive during a storm, Nova Scotians can call 511 for provincial highway conditions or 1-888-432-3233 for local road information.
Drivers should also adjust their speed according to the conditions, follow traffic at a safe distance and be aware of black ice that can form instantly. Drivers can make sure they are ready for winter by installing winter tires, through proper maintenance of their vehicle and having a winter survival kit.
