Province Invests in Downtown Truro

Economic and Rural Development and Tourism (Jan. 2011 - April 2015)

Downtown Truro will become more attractive to businesses and residents with support from the province to develop and improve public spaces.

Economic and Rural Development and Tourism Minister Percy Paris announced a $150,000 investment in the Downtown Truro Partnership, today, Jan. 19.

"Our urban areas are an important tool for growing our economy and helping our communities become more sustainable," said Mr. Paris. "This investment is an example of how jobsHere is taking a more strategic approach to increasing the competitiveness of our communities."

The investment, through the Community Development Fund, supports the $1.6-million Downtown Truro Development Project. Previously announced funding partners for the project include ACOA ($800,000), the Downtown Truro Partnership ($100,000), and the Town of Truro ($50,000).

"Improving the appearance of our public spaces brings our vision for downtown Truro another step closer to completion," said Truro Mayor Bill Mills. "Supporting our already strong and vibrant core will encourage residents to spend more time at the heart of our town, and lead to even more prosperity for our businesses."

Individual businesses have also committed $500,000 for the project to update facades throughout the area.

"This is huge step in the right direction for our community," said Debbie Elliott, executive director of the Downtown Truro Partnership. "Providing places for social interaction and cultural events enhances the look of downtown Truro, complements the Facade Improvement Incentive Project and adds to the overall resident and visitor experience."

The Community Development Fund assists regional areas and rural communities with local planning and entrepreneurship. It helps to develop co-operatives and projects to ensure sustainable communities across Nova Scotia. Last year, projects totaled more than $1.4 million.
