Climate Change Guidebooks For Developers A Canadian First

Environment (April 2008 - Feb. 2021)

Nova Scotia is the first province in Canada to help project developers navigate climate change issues with two guidebooks released today, Feb. 10.

"Government is taking action now to prepare for the future," said Minister of Environment, Sterling Belliveau. "These guides make it easier for developers to tackle climate change throughout project planning and development."

The Environmental Assessment Guidebook helps project developers integrate climate change in environmental assessments.

The Project Development Guide addresses ways to consider climate change in design and planning of large developments, such as subdivisions or major industrial facilities, but can also be used in smaller projects.

The guides will help project developers design to withstand extreme weather associated with climate change, and reduce greenhouse-gas emissions from new development.

Both books are based on Atlantic climate change science and produced by the Climate Change Directorate, a division of the Department of Environment.

The Climate Change Directorate works with provincial departments, municipalities, agencies, schools, and hospitals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and ensure effective adaptive measures are used.

The guidebooks are a Climate Change Action Plan commitment and can be downloaded at www.gov.ns.ca/nse/ea/pubs.asp .
