Province Sponsors Atlantic Youth Gathering

Labour and Advanced Education (Jan. 2011 - Aug. 2021)

The province is supporting young entrepreneurs through an investment in the Atlantic Canada Youth Entrepreneurship Summit.

Labour and Advanced Education Minister Marilyn More announced today, March 24, a $30,000 provincial investment for the summit.

"We are pleased to help support this event and bring together the next generation of young entrepreneurs," said Ms. More. "Fostering a culture of innovative entrepreneurship will help lead to long-term skill development and economic growth across Atlantic Canada. This is exactly what jobsHere is all about."

The departments of Labour and Advanced Education and Economic and Rural Development and Tourism will each provide $15,000. The summit will take place at St. Francis Xavier University May 13-15, and will bring together 200 young entrepreneurs, ages 16 to 29, from across the Atlantic provinces.

"Youth employment and the associated out-migration is a major issue in Atlantic Canada. This summit will give youth the opportunity to engage in discussions around entrepreneurship and long-term community economic development," said Melissa MacMaster, entrepreneurship co-ordinator, St. FX's Enterprise Development Centre.

"By contributing to provincial action plans, participants will be directly involved in making rural communities places where young people want to stay."

Speakers for the three-day event include: Peter Kenyon of Australia's Bank of Ideas; Brad McLeod, CEO of New Brunswick's Momentum Group; and Tal Dehtiar, president and founder of Toronto's Oliberte Footwear.

The governments of P.E.I. and Newfoundland and Labrador, the Municipality and County of Antigonish, and St. FX also invested in the event.
