A new long-term care facility in Middleton offers seniors a home away from home. Officially opened today, March 24, Heart of the Valley Long-Term Care Centre is a place where friends and family can ensure their loved ones receive the support and quality of care they need, in a home-like environment.

Operated by GEM, Heart of the Valley is a 50-bed nursing home level facility, built to replace the North Hills nursing home in Granville Ferry.

"This facility will enable its residents to receive the care and support they need," said MLA Jim Morton on behalf of Health and Wellness Minister, Maureen MacDonald. "We want residents to feel at home, and this facility allows them to be close to their families and friends and remain in the community."

Reflecting new provincial design standards, which emphasize home-like surroundings, the facility has two, 12-unit households and two, 13-unit households. Large cathedral ceilings in the living and dining room areas provide natural light, and residents have access to a landscaped outdoor courtyard, spiritual room and multi-purpose room.

Clients have access to 24-hour nursing care, as well as medical, nutritional and pharmacy services, and occupational therapy and physiotherapy. Other features include a room for family visits and functions, hair salon and common areas to host entertainment programs and religious services.

"This facility moves away from the traditional idea of a nursing home and focuses on the comfort and care of each individual resident," said Colin Bagnell, GEM Health Care Group. "It allows them to be more independent and have flexibility and control over their day-to-day activities."

The 50 beds at the centre are part of the 849 replacement long-term care beds, which are part of the Continuing Care Strategy.

Access to Heart of the Valley and other provincial long-term care facilities is through the Department of Health and Wellness' Single Entry Access system at 1-800-225-7225.
