A new long-term care facility in Falmouth, Hants Co., is offering seniors a home away from home.

Windsor Elms Village, which officially opened today, April 1, is a place where friends and family can ensure their loved ones receive the support and quality of care they need, in a home-like environment.

Operated by the Windsor Elms Village for Continuing Care Society, the 108-bed nursing home facility was built to replace the former Windsor Elms.

"Windsor Elms Village will enable its residents to receive the care and support they need in a facility that feels like home," said Education Minister Ramona Jennex on behalf of Health and Wellness Minister, Maureen MacDonald. "This facility allows residents to be close to their families and friends and remain in the community."

Reflecting new provincial design standards, which emphasize home-like surroundings, the facility consists of 12, nine-resident neighbourhoods.

Residents have access to six therapeutic gardens, a spiritual room and a multi-purpose room.

Clients also have 24-hour nursing care, along with medical, nutritional and pharmacy services, occupational therapy and physiotherapy. Other features include a room for family visits and functions and a hair salon. The facility utilizes geo-thermal heating.

"I receive the very best of care here at the Elms," said resident Lawrence Eddy. "The staff are starting to help me plan for gardening in the spring. I'm looking forward to getting out in the gardens when the weather warms up."

The 108 beds at Windsor Elms Village are part of the 849 replacement long-term care beds, outlined in the Continuing Care Strategy.

Access to Windsor Elms and other provincial long-term care facilities is through the Department of Health and Wellness Single Entry Access system at 1-800-225-7225.
