Inspection Fees for Small Trailers to Go Up

Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations (Oct. 2000 - March 2014)

Starting Aug. 1, the cost of having some trailers safety inspected will go up.

Changes to the Vehicle Inspection Regulations will increase inspection fees for trailers with a registered weight of less than 4,500 kilograms. This will affect anyone who owns a small utility trailer, camper trailer, or snowmobile trailer, among others. There are almost 45,000 of these trailers registered in the province.

Inspection fees will change as follows:

  • trailers weighing less than 4,500 kilograms with no brakes will cost $15, up from $10.71
  • single-axle trailers less than 4,500 kilograms with hydraulic or electric brakes will cost $20.50, up from $10.71
  • trailers with more than one axle will cost an additional $10.50 per axle

The amendments will also allow one-year inspection stickers to be issued to New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island residents who have their vehicles inspected here.

Nova Scotia issues safety inspection stickers that are good for two years, while New Brunswick and P.E.I. issue them for one.

Another amendment will allow certified technicians from across Canada to do vehicle inspections in Nova Scotia.
