Deputy Minister Gets into the Swim of Things for United Way

Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal (Oct. 2007 - Feb. 2021)

Many volunteers at the United Way think Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal deputy minister David Darrow walks on water because of his staunch support for United Way projects.

While Mr. Darrow is not really able to stroll across the waves, he is willing to again swim Halifax Harbour to attract pledges to the United Way.

At noon on Wednesday, Aug. 24, Mr. Darrow and department webmaster Kevin Doran, will dive into the harbour to encourage colleagues and friends to dig into their pockets.

"David's commitment to the United Way is an inspiration to our volunteer team," said department United Way representative Adrianne Snow. "He raised $2,500 by swimming the harbour last year and this year, he says he won't submerge for less than $3,000."

The swim starts at the Woodside Ferry Terminal and will end near Bishop's Landing, at about 12:40 p.m. Those coming to cheer them on will be able to tap their feet to the music of the Steel Toed Boots, a department musical duo, while they chow down at a United Way barbecue at the landing site.

For more than 50 years, the provincial government has contributed to the United Way of Canada. Every year, more than 1,600 provincial employees make donations. The government employee campaign begins in October. Contributions stay in the community and help fund 57 agencies and more than 100 programs. In the case of bad weather, the event will be held Thursday, Aug. 25, at the same time.
