Lifeguard Supervision Ends This Weekend

Health and Wellness

NOTE: A list of beaches and their supervision status, follows this release.

Sunday, Aug. 28, will be the last day of supervision for most of the 23 beaches covered by the Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service.

"It has been another successful season for the Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service," said MLA Gary Ramey on behalf of Health and Wellness Minister Maureen MacDonald. "Nova Scotians and visitors were able to enjoy the sand and surf, thanks to hard working lifeguards who ensured access to safe, supervised beaches across the province."

Lifeguards have been supervising the beaches from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily since July 1. Since the service began 39 years ago, there has not been a drowning during supervised hours. This summer has been no exception.

"Our lifeguards are skilled and prepared for any situation on our beaches. We have performed many rescues and interventions, but the rate of major incidents remains low," said Paul D'Eon, director of the Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service. "The season is not over yet, but we are proud to have kept our record intact. Nova Scotians who continue to swim on beaches that are no longer supervised should keep safety in mind."

Nova Scotia will also host the Canadian Surf Lifesaving Championship at Martinique and Rainbow Haven Beach from Aug. 26 to 28. This is the seventh time Nova Scotia has hosted the championship and lifeguards from the Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service will compete.

The Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service is a joint project of the Department of Health and Wellness and the Lifesaving Society, Nova Scotia Branch.
