Province Reduces Out-of-province Travel Costs

Treasury Board (Sept. 2009 - June 2013)

Since 2008, the province has reduced out-of-province travel costs by 38 per cent or $1.7 million, keeping its commitment to reduce spending and live within its means.

"We have said since the beginning that this government would look for ways to reduce spending and lead by example and I am pleased that we are doing just that," said David Wilson, acting Minister of Treasury Board. "We have achieved a 38 per cent reduction in out-of-province travel since coming to office, and we are confident further reductions can be achieved in the years ahead."

In May, government adopted a new department travel policy that limits the number of staff able to travel out of province for things like conferences and trade shows.

"I want to take this opportunity to recognize and thank the employees of the civil service who have already worked hard to save money on out of province travel costs," said Mr. Wilson. "Whether it was participating in more conference calls, webinars or videoconferencing, employees have stepped up to the plate and are making a difference and helping the province get back to balance."

The province will continue to look for ways to further reduce out-of-province travel and issue a request for Expressions of Interest for a corporate travel service provider.

"The request for expressions of interest is another important step to see if further opportunities exist to lower travel costs, maximize travel discounts from suppliers, and ensure a high level of service for the traveler," said Mr. Wilson. "Out-of-province travel is essential to conducting important government business, but in times of fiscal restraint, it is more important than ever to identify all opportunities to lower costs and live within our means."

The request for Expressions of Interest for a corporate travel service provider will be issued by the end of the week at www.gov.ns.ca/tenders/tenders/ns-tenders.aspx .
