Status of Women

Six new members are joining the Advisory Council on the Status of Women.

Beatrice LeBlanc of Sydney, will be the new chair of the council. Ms. Leblanc, retired, was a long-time executive director of the Cape Breton Transition House. The appointments were announced today, Nov. 9.

"With her experience as a strong advocate for women and her knowledge of domestic violence, I am confident that Beatrice LeBlanc will continue the important work of the advisory council," said Marilyn More, Minister responsible for the Advisory Council of the Status of Women. "I welcome and thank the members of the council who have volunteered to make life better for women in Nova Scotia."

For more than 30 years, the advisory council has been bringing the concerns of women to government and been responsible for advancing equality, fairness and dignity for all women in Nova Scotia.

"I believe that a strong and healthy woman is one of the most important ingredients for a strong and healthy family and community," said Ms. LeBlanc. "I look forward to working with the council members and staff so that women's issues continue to be brought forward."

Other new members of the council are Wanda Bernard of Halifax, Felicia Eghan of Halifax, Ivy Shaw of Stillwater Lake, Rhonda Britton of Halifax, and Doreen Parsons of Hubbards. Returning member Jean d'Entrement is from West Pubnico.

The advisory council also works with federal and municipal governments, community and business organizations, and universities to increase political participation of women, build women's economic equality, reduce violence against women, and improve the health and well-being of women and their families.
