Province Invests in Building Healthier Community

Health and Wellness

Cape Breton residents will have more opportunities to live healthier, safer and more active lives, thanks to a $1-million investment to support programming at the Cape Breton YMCA.

Deputy Premier Frank Corbett made the announcement today, Nov. 14, on behalf of Health and Wellness Minister Maureen MacDonald.

"Government seeks every opportunity to invest in the health and well-being of Nova Scotians," said Mr. Corbett. "The Cape Breton YMCA is an important service provider to the whole of Cape Breton, and this investment will allow them to continue providing quality service to children, families and communities."

The investment will help the YMCA provide and expand programming, including:

  • continuing to offer financial assistance so individuals and families can take part in physical activity
  • train additional staff and volunteers in youth programs so young children can develop an appreciation for physical activity
  • continue to offer relevant youth programming in cooking, nutrition, leadership and other arts

"The YMCA of Cape Breton is dedicated to dramatically improving the health of children in Cape Breton," said Andre Gallant, CEO, Cape Breton YMCA. "Our efforts are focused on fighting childhood obesity and providing opportunities for families to live active, healthy lifestyles."

One of the oldest and most diverse charities in Cape Breton, the YMCA is a volunteer-driven organization that reaches more than 21,000 people.

This investment will help build the foundation for the province's Childhood Obesity Prevention Strategy.
