Health and Wellness

NOTE: A list of investments awarded in the Fundy region follows this release.

Nova Scotians will have more ways to stay fit and have fun, as the province invests $263,000 to improve and upgrade recreation facilities in the Fundy Region.

Nine grants were announced today, July 24, under the Recreation Facility Development Program. Truro-Bible Hill MLA Lenore Zann made the announcement on behalf of Health and Wellness Minister David Wilson.

"The province remains committed to helping make lives better for Nova Scotians, and that commitment includes helping our families, children and youth to stay active and healthy," said Ms. Zann. "To help us achieve a healthier Nova Scotia, I am pleased to announce that government is giving over $3.1 million toward 75 projects in organizations and recreation facilities across the province."

The grants will help to renovate facilities, develop and maintain walking trails, and build and upgrade various fields and buildings used for sport and recreation.

For the Fundy Region, the grants were announced at Truro Tennis Club, which received $15,000 to construct two mini tennis courts to better teach children the sport.

"We are so grateful to the Department of Health and Wellness for being supportive of our program Progressive Tennis that focuses on tennis for 10 and under," said Ron Chisholm, president of the Truro Tennis Club. "This is a great opportunity for families to introduce their children as young as five years old to a sport they can play their entire life in a fun social atmosphere."

Recreation Facility Development grants help community groups, municipalities and other not-for-profit organizations develop facilities to increase public participation in sport and physical recreation.

Thrive! A plan for a healthier Nova Scotia sets out 34 main actions to create supportive environments for healthy eating and physical activity, such as designing new after-school programs to target junior high students living in rural and remote communities, new programs to provide opportunities for free access to sport and recreation facilities, and supporting healthy food policy in public institutions, including sport and recreation settings.
