Flying Lantern Deemed Unsafe Fire Hazard

The Office of the Fire Marshal has deemed flying lanterns a fire hazard and prohibited under the Fire Code.

Flying lanterns, also know as sky lanterns, are uncontrolled devices that use an open flame to float through the air. There is typically no steering mechanism or features to keep the fire contained and ensure they land safely.

"We have seen several incidents where fires appear to have been started by floating lanterns," said Harold Pothier, acting fire marshal. "There is no way to control them once they are lit and launched into the air. They pose a serious fire risk and should not be sold or used."

The risk of fire is especially high during the dry, hot summer months. With these conditions, flying lanterns have an even greater potential to cause damage to property or people.
