Lifeguard Supervision Ends This Weekend

Health and Wellness

NOTE: A list of beaches that will continue to have lifeguard service until Monday, Sept. 3, and on designated weekends into September, follows this release.

Sunday, Aug. 26, is the last day of supervision for most of the 23 beaches supervised by the Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service.

"It has been another successful season for the Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service," said Health and Wellness Minister David Wilson. "With especially nice weather and warm water, many Nova Scotians and visitors took full advantage of our beaches to stay cool.

"I would like to thank the hard-working lifeguards who ensured supervised beaches across the province were safe."

Lifeguards have been supervising the beaches from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily since June 30th. Since the service began 40 years ago, there has not been a drowning during supervised hours and, to date, this summer has been no exception.

"Our lifeguards are skilled and prepared for any situation on our beaches," said Paul D'Eon, director of the Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service. "We have performed many rescues and interventions, but the rate of major incidents remains low.

"We are proud to have kept our record intact, thus far, but the season is not quite finished yet, supervision on select beaches continues until Sept. 3."

The Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service is a joint project of the Department of Health and Wellness and the Lifesaving Society, Nova Scotia Branch.
