Slowing Down in School Zones is the Law on Sept. 1

The province is reminding Nova Scotians that slowing down to 30 km/h where children are present will be the law in most school zones beginning Saturday, Sept. 1.

The Safer School Zone Act means drivers will have to reduce speed in school areas to 30 km/h, in a 50 km/h zone, when children are present. In areas where the speed limit is higher than 50 km/h entering the school zone, a 50 km/h reduced speed limit will continue to be in effect.

"Our goal, as always, is to protect our children who sometimes forget the rules of the road," said Maurice Smith, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal. "Slower is safer whenever you're driving near children."

New signs are being posted in school zones around the province and an ad campaign has started to make sure Nova Scotians are aware of the legislation.
