Nova Scotia Museum Celebrates Culture Days

The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in Halifax is celebrating the third annual Culture Days, Saturday, Sept. 29 and Sunday, Sept. 30, with two distinct programs presented through partnerships with the Nova Scotia Sea School and Tango Nova.

"Our maritime traditions and culture are diverse and exciting," said Communities, Culture and Heritage Minister Leonard Preyra. "The Culture Days festival is a wonderful way for the Maritime Museum to engage with community partners in celebration of our shared culture and heritage."

Nova Scotians can watch and participate in the restoration of Dorothea, the Nova Scotia Sea School's first original sailboat for youth expeditions and day sails. The complete restoration of this Sable Island surf boat will take place in the courtyard of the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic this fall.

During Culture Days, people can take part in the maritime tradition of wooden boatbuilding while reviving the Dorothea. There will be plenty of sanding to do all weekend, and the Sea School is offering free nautical demonstrations and activities between 11 a.m. to noon, and 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Saturday evening from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., people can experience the flavour of tango culture from the port city of Buenos Aires to the Port of Halifax during a Culture Days event called Tango À la Carte. Spend an evening at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic with the Halifax tango community, and order up Tango à la Carte! All events are free.

Culture Days is a collaborative coast-to-coast-to-coast weekend of events and activities to raise the awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities. It takes place at various locations around the province.
