Better Support Reinstated for Recovery Houses

People living in recovery houses will get better access to the clinical help they need to get healthy and move towards a productive future with the return of the homes' management to the Department of Health and Wellness.

"People who are taking the brave step to receive treatment deserve to have the best available support," said Health and Wellness Minister David Wilson. "Many of these people are dealing with issues related to addiction and mental health. It only makes sense to ensure that they have access to the experts in these areas and are more closely involved in their recovery."

In 2008, recovery house management was moved from the Department of Health to Community Services. Today's change, ensures services are better connected with the government's mental health and addictions strategy that was released this spring.

Under the Health and Wellness umbrella, recovery houses will remain provincially funded and monitored as they were with Community Services. Residents will benefit from the department's strong relationships with the province's district health authorities, getting more complete and collaborative care.

Nova Scotia's recovery houses are: Alcare Place, Freedom Foundation, the Salvation Army Anchorage Program, and the Margueritte Centre.

The change of recovery house management is effective immediately.
