Investigation Begins Into Death of Person in Custody

The province's independent Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) is investigating the death of a 66-year-old man who had been arrested by the Cape Breton Regional Police.

At about 8:30 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 9, police arrested a man after searching a vehicle waiting to board the Newfoundland-Labrador ferry at the North Sydney terminal. The man was transported to cells in Sydney. Upon arrival, police noted he was in medical distress. They administered first aid and CPR until EHS paramedics arrived. The man was transported to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, where he later died.

In accordance with the Police Act, the Cape Breton Regional Police Service referred the incident to the Serious Incident Response Team, which assumed responsibility for the investigation.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to call SIRT at 902-424-2010.

SIRT is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia, whether or not there is an allegation of wrongdoing. Investigations are under the direction and control of independent civilian director Ron MacDonald.

The team can independently launch an investigation, or begin one after a referral from a chief of police, the head of the RCMP in Nova Scotia or the Minister of Justice. It can also investigate after a complaint from the public.

The Police Act requires the director to file a public report summarizing the results of the investigation within three months after it is finished.
