Sackville RCMP Officer Arrested for Domestic Violence

The province's independent Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) is investigating an allegation of domestic violence against a member of the Sackville Detachment of the RCMP.

Shortly after midnight Saturday, Jan. 5, the RCMP received a 911 call from the home of a male RCMP member who lives in Beaverbank. The female common-law spouse, made assault allegations during the call. The RCMP immediately responded and placed the officer under arrest. Several people were in the home.

In accordance with the Police Act, the RCMP called SIRT, which responded and assumed responsibility for the investigation.

No charges have been laid. The officer was released on conditions to appear in Dartmouth provincial court Wednesday, Feb. 20. The investigation is ongoing.

SIRT is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia. Investigations are under the direction and control of independent civilian director Ron MacDonald.

The team can independently launch an investigation, or begin one after a referral from a chief of police, the head of the RCMP in Nova Scotia or the Minister of Justice. It can also investigate after a complaint from the public.

A public report summarizing the results of the investigation must be filed within three months after it is finished.
