Another tournament is the latest in a line of large-scale sporting events to choose Nova Scotia as its backdrop, generating economic and tourism benefits for all Nova Scotians.

Liverpool will host the 2014 Canadian Junior Curling Championships, showcasing Nova Scotia and its south shore as a world-class destination for visitors, events and sports fans.

"The 2014 Canadian Junior Curling Championships are an exciting opportunity for our country's talented young athletes to compete on a national stage and to promote Nova Scotia as a top-notch destination," said MLA Vicki Conrad, on behalf of Economic and Rural Development and Tourism Minister Percy Paris. "Hosting major events like these helps grow our economy and attract new visitors to our province."

Major events play an important role in tourism and creating economic activity throughout the province. Economic activity from the 2014 Curling Championships is estimated at more than $3 million.

The province will support the tournament with a $75,000 investment.

Donna Hatt, vice-chair of the 2014 Host Society, said the event builds on southwest Nova Scotia's growing reputation as an outstanding major events host.

"This event will deliver international exposure for the province, and bring economic benefits," said Ms. Hatt. "The South Shore is competing for new economic activity and winning on a global stage."

Southwestern Nova Scotia also recently hosted the World Junior A Hockey Challenge, a seven-day event with competing teams from Russia, Sweden, United States, Switzerland, Canada East and Canada West.

The Canadian Junior Curling Championships will take place over 10 days in January 2014 and will be held at the Queens Place Emera Centre and the Liverpool Curling Club.
