Premier Saddened by Passing of Daurene Lewis

Premier's Office

Premier Darrell Dexter expressed sadness over the passing of Daurene Lewis.

Ms. Lewis was a member of the Order of Canada, the first African Nova Scotian woman to run in a provincial election, and the first female African Nova Scotian in Canada to be elected mayor (Annapolis Royal). Most recently, she was principal at the Nova Scotia Community College IT and Akerley campuses.

"Daurene was loved and respected by all who were fortunate enough to meet her," said Premier Dexter. "She was a trailblazer if ever there was one, a true leader, and a passionate volunteer - a great Nova Scotian whose advice I valued.

"At a shipbuilding announcement at the NSCC this fall, Daurene spoke about the pride and optimism she had in her students for the future," said the premier. "Perhaps above all else, she believed in community; she leaves us having made her mark on ours."

The premier expressed condolences to Ms. Lewis's friends and family, colleagues and members of her African Nova Scotian and community college communities.
