New Resource Helps Students With Career Planning

Schools have a new resource to help students explore career options and prepare for the workforce.

The Futureseekers kiosks, available in every high school, gather career-planning resources in one accessible site for teachers to use in the classroom or students to investigate on their own.

"Our students have many exciting opportunities waiting for them as they prepare for higher education and the workforce," said Education Minister Ramona Jennex when she announced the resource today, Feb. 11 at Northeast Kings Education Centre in Canning.

"We made a commitment to prepare our students for good jobs and citizenship in their communities. This easy-to-use tool will help equip students to make informed decisions about their futures."

Ms. Jennex launched the kiosks as part of her annual update on the Kids and Learning First education plan, announced one year ago. Futureseekers supports the commitments in Kids and Learning First and the Workforce Strategy to expand career development efforts in high schools and link learning to the workplace. The site is closely linked to careers.novascotia.ca .

"I am excited by the possibility that Futureseekers will help highlight the importance of career exploration in our high schools," said Mary Hanneman, guidance counsellor at Northeast Kings. "This will encourage students to begin the career- planning process earlier and make it more accessible."

The Futureseekers site includes job profiles, videos and articles on different careers, planning steps, career quizzes, and information to help students make informed choices about further study or training.

A mobile Futureseekers career app will also be launched in the spring.
