Youth from 4-H clubs around Atlantic Canada will be learning new skills at a leadership conference in Debert this weekend, March 22-24.

Seventy-five 4-H members, age 14-21, will discuss topics such as financial skills, personal branding, networking and online security.

"The 4-H program is recognized for providing rural youth with the self-confidence and life skills that can benefit them in all areas of their lives," said Agriculture Minister John MacDonell. "This leadership conference will focus on subjects that are particularly relevant in today's digital world."

Conference sessions will teach how to keep bills in line, present a positive image to potential employers, how networking can help people recognize, create or act on opportunities as well as how to protect personal information online. Fitness classes and an Atlantic Handyman Challenge are also on the agenda.

"The Atlantic 4-H committee is pleased to offer this learning opportunity for our youth members," said Ruth Grant, senior agriculture leadership co-ordinator. "Along with sharpening their skills at this conference, 4-H representatives from the Atlantic provinces will be making lasting friendships."

Tyler Hayden, a Canadian author and motivational speaker living in Lunenburg, will provide interactive and entertaining activities to help members strike a balanced lifestyle at home, school and in business.

Conference funding is provided by the Atlantic 4-H Committee, Credit Union Atlantic, Agrium and the 4-H councils from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador.

4-H Canada is celebrating its 100th anniversary. The leadership development program teaches youth important skills to build confidence and be productive citizens.
