Lecture to Discuss Connection Between Diet and Cancer

The connection between diet and cancer is the topic of the next Cancer Answers lecture, on Tuesday, May 21.
Organized by Cancer Care Nova Scotia, the lecture will take place from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Royal Bank Lecture Theatre, Halifax Infirmary, 1796 Summer St., Halifax. Simultaneous video conferences will be available at 19 sites across the province.
The lecture, presented by Patricia Poulsen, a clinical dietitian with the Capital Health Cancer Care Program, is designed to provide Nova Scotians with quality cancer care information.
"Many people don't realize the profound impact good nutrition and diet has on the prevention of new and recurring cancers," said Ms. Poulsen. "Experts believe more than half of all human cancers are preventable if individuals make certain lifestyle choices such as following a healthy diet. During this lecture, I will discuss healthy eating guidelines, focusing on foods to include and limit, and the importance of achieving and maintaining healthy weight and its connection to cancer."
Cancer Care Nova Scotia, a Department of Health and Wellness program, was created in 1998 to facilitate quality cancer prevention and care for all Nova Scotians. It supports healthcare professionals in providing patients with high quality care.
Cancer Care Nova Scotia's work with other organizations and its screening programs raise awareness about the importance of healthy lifestyles to reduce cancer risk, and educate Nova Scotians about available testing, such as Pap tests for cervical cancer and home screening kits for colon cancer. The goal is to find cancer earlier and treat it better.
