Peggy's Cove Lighthouse Promotion to Draw Toronto Visitors

Nova Scotia Tourism Agency (May 2013 - Sept. 2016)

Thousands of Torontonians will take in the wonder of the Peggy's Cove lighthouse in an innovative Nova Scotia tourism promotion.

The Peggy's Corner installation, a 28-foot replica of the iconic lighthouse, opened today, May 15, at the corner of Bay and Wellington streets in downtown Toronto.

"The Peggy's Cove lighthouse is an international tourism icon, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors every year," said Minister of Economic and Rural Development and Tourism, Graham Steele. "The Peggy's Corner promotion is one of many creative tactics in our Take Yourself There tourism marketing campaign, which is encouraging more first-time visitors from outside the region to visit Nova Scotia."

Ontario is Nova Scotia's largest market outside Atlantic Canada, with high potential for new visitors who will spend more and stay longer.

Today's launch event showcased the amazing sights, sounds and tastes of Nova Scotia, including performances by award-winning comedian Candy Palmater and crowd-favourite Squid Precision Drumming. The Kilted Chef, Alain Bosse, offered a Lobster 101 demonstration, and treated hundreds of lucky people to samples of his Nova Scotia lobster roll.

Taste of Nova Scotia was also on hand to launch its Nova Scotia Eatery tour. The Eatery, a partnership between Taste of Nova Scotia and the Nova Scotia Tourism Agency, is a mobile kitchen that will showcase Nova Scotia products and promote the province as a unique culinary destination as it travels throughout Ontario and Quebec. "Nova Scotia is quickly becoming a recognized culinary destination," said Janice Ruddock, executive director of Taste of Nova Scotia. "We're thrilled to bring a taste of Nova Scotia to our friends in Toronto today."

The promotion will run until June 9 and include street teams that will invite people to explore Peggy's Corner and plan a visit to Nova Scotia. The teams will also promote a Peggy's Corner social media contest where people can take a photo of themselves in front of the lighthouse replica and post to Instagram or Twitter using #peggyscorner. Daily winners will receive a lobster dinner.
