A new guest services building is making Caribou-Munroes Island Provincial Park an even better destination for campers, picnickers and swimmers.

The province officially opened the new building today, June 7, at the Pictou County park which opens for campers June 14.

Caribou-Munroes Island is in its 55th year of operation and was one of the province's three most-visited parks last year, issuing 5,000 camping permits.

"Each of our provincial parks has activities and events that highlight the best natural attributes of Nova Scotia," said Natural Resources Minister Charlie Parker. "Caribou-Munroes Island park has a lot to offer visitors and is a great base from which to explore our beautiful county."

The park is about six kilometres from the Town of Pictou.

"Caribou-Munroes Island is a wonderful spot for outdoor physical activity," said Sally O'Neill, trails co-ordinator, Active Pictou County. "It's a valuable piece of nature that is constantly being changed by weather and tide, each visit uncovers something new."

The provincial park is open until Oct. 14. Camping reservations are recommended and can be made online at www.novascotiaparks.ca or by calling 1-888-544-3434.

The province is introducing Learn2Camp this year for people with limited camping experience, or who want to brush up on their skills. Learn2Camp will be offered at Smiley's Provincial Park in Hants County on Saturday, July 6, and Sunday, July 7.

Natural Resources has a network of 120 provincial parks. About 24,000 people participated in parks activities in 2012.
